When you protect your home with an adequate home security system, it does not take much to secure your environment.  You will want to make sure you have good physical security to your windows and doors. Also consider adding physical security to your computer equipment, it will slow the intruder down.  Location of your home office can make a difference.  Setting up your office in the basement or upper levels of the home will make your home office less visible.  If you have no choice but to locate in an area with exposure such as windows your home security system will need to provide the proper security devices.

When you plan a home security system, such as adding bars to the windows of you home office you may want to consider adding them to the entire home.  You will avoid your home office being apparent.

Most home security systems will have motion detectors and cameras available.  You may want to consider this for several reasons.  Most importantly it will provide recorded information for the police and to your insurance company.  Another area of concern is water you may want to consider putting in a water alarm.  As we all know water and computers don’t mix.  Integrating a water alarm in your home security plan will protect your home office from flooding from a dishwasher, water heater and water refrigerators for example.  They are easy to install and will provide peace of mind while protecting your intellectual property and your company asset.

As with anything else you can have the best money can buy in a home security system.  You will need to determine how much you have to protect or lose.   Consider installing multiple sensors. Infrared is the most common and easiest to use.  This sensor detects body heat as some one comes within range of the sensor.  Infrared is the most common choice when you are concerned about price. There are more products to help secure a home office such as biometric security.  Unlike keys, cards or number sequences, access through biometric security cannot be transferred from person to person. It’s almost impossible to steal your fingerprint and with the technology available today it only takes a second to grant access to your home office.

Which ever type of home security system you chose remember the basics in home security. Keeps lights on in your home office , keep the window covering open this will allow someone to see in side the office if there is a intruder and if you are going to be away for a long period of time consider hiring a house sitter too.
