What would you do if you stumbled, or were at home, during a burglary in progress?  For some, the answer might be easy, for others maybe not.  One thing is for sure, there is no telling how you will act under pressure.  Therefore, let’s be smart and prepare if something like this were to happen to you.

The first thing you should do, if someone breaks into your house and you are home, is to try and escape!  Get right out of the house and find help, but if this is not possible then find the safest room to hide and take your cell phone with you.  Lock the door and barricade yourself inside the room.  Be quiet and try to listen to what the burglar is saying or doing.  If you are with someone else, don’t argue on what to do, doing so could alert the intruder to where you are.  It’s important to call 911 as soon as you can.  Be specific with the dispatcher- give him your name and address.  Then tell the dispatcher where you are located in the house and where you think the burglar is.  If confronted by the burglar, don’t panic and don’t argue.  Also, try not to look the burglar in the eye.  If you have a weapon, only use it as a last resort.

On the other hand, if you return home and find a door or window unexpectedly open, don’t go in.  Go to your nearest neighbor and call the police.  Hopefully, the police will get there in time to nab the culprit
