This is an interesting question when you stop and think about it. Some people cannot totally control how safe they are in their own home depending on where they live.

However many people could do things to protect themselves and feel safer. This is especially true in things you do on a day-to-day basis.

The scary thing is burglars could attack almost any home. However they do not like to be seen and will avoid homes where there is activity that would scare them away. So what can you do?

Even if you live in a low crime area you should never let strangers in your house. We teach our children to avoid strangers yet oftentimes we do not take our own advice.

If people are coming to your home in uniforms that doesn't
mean they are legitimate either. This could just be a disguise.

If a stranger wants to borrow your phone because they say their car broke down you can offer to make a call for them. In reality most people have cell phones and would have no need for you to make a call for them.

Another thing you can do is limit the number of keys you hand out. Don't give keys to friends even if you think you can trust them. And never do silly things such as hiding keys in an obvious place where they can be found.

Lock your doors and windows even if you did not used to in the past and teach your children to do the same thing.
Another excellent piece of advice is to alter your routine. If anybody is watching your house you might be establishing a pattern of when they feel they can break in.
