DIY Home Security

DIY interior design is one thing, but what about DIY Home Security?  Is it a wise idea to take your family’s wellbeing into your own hands?  According to Jonathan Zelberg, a Kansas security specialist, DIY home security is the best deterrent of burglaries.

Zelberg spends two hours every Thursday night at local community centers teaching DIY home security classes to Kansas citizens.  In each class Zelberg explains the seven most effective DIY home security projects.

  1. Shed Some Light On the Subject

Burglars can’t be seen in the dark, so installing exterior motion lights near each door and under your home’s eaves takes away their security.

  1. Lock It Up

Most burglars enter through unlocked doors and windows.  Fit each door with a strong deadbolt with a reinforced strike plate and each window with sturdy window locks.

  1. Work in the Yard

Criminals spend an average of 30-45 minutes casing a home before they break into it.  During this time they look for places to hide, such as behind bushes and shrubs, and easy entry points.  Spending a few hours trimming bushes and hedges and cutting tree limbs to below window will often send the burglar on his way to another home.

  1. Close the Door

This DIY home security project may be the easiest of the bunch: close your garage door when you aren’t at home.  Ninety percent of burglaries occur when no one is home, and an empty garage is a sure sign of an empty home.

  1. Man’s Best Friend

Even though this isn’t truly a DIY home security project, it’s still a good idea because half of all burglars won’t break into a home if they hear a dog barking.  If you can’t get a dog, invest in a barking dog alarm.  When these alarms sense movement they emit an authentic-sounding electronic bark to scare away burglars.

  1. Sign Up

Security companies provide their customers with yard signs for a reason:  they are a proven deterrent.  Putting a sign in your yard, even if you don’t have a security system (see tip #7), often prevents criminals from entering your home.  You can easily purchase one of these signs online

  1. Get Alarmed

Installing a wireless burglar alarm could be the most valuable DIY home security project you ever take on.  You can purchase a self-installed home security system for about $200, and you can easily and quickly install it yourself at a fraction of the cost of a professionally installed system.

As Zelberg tells his classes each week, “DIY interior design may make your house a home, but DIY home security makes your home worth living in.”
