For the Do-it-yourself individual the IP security camera is comparatively simple.  Unique video capture hardware is not required and it can be connected to a standard network. Because of its computer capabilities, it's accessible and configurable through standard computer controls.

If you have a standard internet browser you are good to go as IP security cameras come with their own web server. To operate it, it's simply a matter of connecting and entering an IP address and you can then access the images.

Clearly being able to connect to a standard computer network makes an IP security camera a desirable proposition. In comparison to standard CCTV cameras they don't require added video capture devices and in most cases, just a single cable is needed for connection because of cameras ability to be powered through a network cable.

Distance is another important issue. As opposed to web cameras which use a USB cable, IP security cameras use of standard network cables allows greater distance coverage. Also, they aren't limited by the number of USB ports on a computer as web cameras allowing connection of a number of IP cameras to a network. What do you want to view?  How far away and how wide an area you want to view will determine the lens. Do you plan to use the camera indoors or outdoors? How much light is available? The amount of light determines how sensitive the camera needs to be. Do you have a large area that requires a Pan, Tilt, Zoom (PTZ) camera? A PTZ camera can step through a set of positions. What frame rate is required? Fast frame rate is required if you are looking at a fast moving object, but if you are using it for general surveillance; you may only require 1 or 2 frames/sec. The higher the frame rate the more storage you will require. What resolution do you require? To be able to identify a person's face you require about 50 pixels/foot. How much bandwidth is used by an IP camera system?
The bandwidth depends on the number of cameras, the resolution of the cameras, the compression scheme used, and the frame rate of the cameras
