Top Ten Jogger Safety Tips

  1. Always run facing the traffic when you can to increase your visibility to drivers.
  1. Stay off the road.  Stick to the sidewalk whenever possible to avoid accidents with motor vehicles.
  1. Double-knot your shoelaces before you start.  You may not notice you’re unlaced until you trip and fall.
  1. Stretch your muscles before jogging, or any exercise, for that matter; it significantly decreases your chances of pulling a muscle.
  1. Try to avoid jogging at night.  If you must run at night, wear reflective, light-colored clothing.
  1. Listening to music or radio can occlude your basic jogger safety.  Leave your iPod at home -– you’ll be glad you did if the sound of a car horn, bicycle bell, or scraping rollerblades saves you from injury.
  1. Always carry change.  It’s easy to stick a dollar bill in your sock, and it can be a lifesaver to have bus fare if you twist an ankle.
  1. Remember what your mother told you:  always look both ways before crossing the street.  Looking left, right, and left again will allow you to see approaching objects or vehicles that may have eluded your peripheral vision on the first glance.
  1. Anticipate vehicles at every crossroads.  Cars can dart in and out of alleyways at a moment’s notice, compromising your jogger safety.
  1. Some extra protection never hurts.  Carry mace or pepper spray with you in the event that you encounter an attacker.

Feeling Winded? Your Attacker May Notice

You’re jogging for your health, and you can feel your heart pumping in energy with every step.  But potential assailants are aware that even if you’re strong, jogging is strenuous and can wear down your ability to put up a fight.  Many runners take jogger safety for granted, but carrying mace or pepper spray can arm you from attackers who prey on women running alone, or even men who look winded.  If you can’t jog with a partner, consider carrying a safety whistle as well as mace or pepper spray.

Fierce Fido:  Dealing with Dogs on Your Jog

We’ve all seen signs that read “Beware of Dog,” but you won’t always be warned if a dangerous dog happens to be on the same route as your morning jog.  Jogger safety is dependent upon a lot of unpredictable factors, unruly dogs being one of them.  The answer to dealing effectively with dangerous dogs is the opposite of what you may think:  stop running.  Running and shouting only stimulate and excite dogs more, so your best bet is to stand still and slowly walk out of the dog’s attack range.  Do not stare into the dog’s eyes, as he will feel threatened and challenged and become more likely to attack.
