Protect the Elderly

On March 9, 2007, 101-year-old Rose Morat was attacked, repeatedly punched in the face and head, and robbed as she was leaving her apartment on her way to church.  The same man, a few minutes later, found his second victim, 85-year-old Elizee Solange, a few blocks away. Both of these women recovered from their ordeals and were relieved to find out that a security camera, which was installed to protect the elderly residents in Morat’s apartment building, caught on video tape the entire beating Morat endured.

Rose Morat was born the year Einstein published the Theory of Relativity and before the invention of the crossword puzzle in 1913.  She’s seen a man walk on the moon, both of her knees replaced, and people walking down the street talking on the phone.  But she never thought she would see a young man punch her 101-year-old face just to steal a few dollars.

The world we live in is no longer the world these women grew up in, and we have to take steps to protect the elderly loved ones in our lives.  According to the professionals at the Home Security Store, it’s easy and relatively quick to protect the elderly from criminals:

  • Place locks that are easy to use on all doors and windows.
  • Install a cordless phone and program in all emergency phone numbers.
  • Buy an emergency whistle to wear around his or her neck.

Senior citizens, who often require the aid of a walker, are what some criminals consider easy targets, but, luckily, there are numerous products available that can protect the elderly from these degenerates.  The Home Security Store professionals also shared some info on the security industry’s most useful devices to protect the elderly:

  • Skylink Emergency Auto Dialers – This device automatically dials up to nine preprogrammed phone numbers at the push of a button on a wireless fob.  This will protect the elderly by alerting the authorities and loved ones in the case of an emergency.
  • Security Systems – The security system should be equipped with window alarms, motion detectors, and surveillance cameras.  Burglars are less likely to break into a home if it is protected by a security system.
  • Panic Switches – Panic switches are installed in the areas of the home where the elderly spend time, such as their bedrooms, bathrooms, and the living room.  When the panic switch is triggered, the security system is activated, which scares away any possible burglars and beckons the aid of the police.

Taking a few preventative steps to protect the elderly in your life can prevent them from falling victim to these atrocious crimes.
