Vacation Home Security

Five years later, Bob Gullentry still remembers every detail of that Friday afternoon in mid-March when he, his wife, Barbara, and their three young children arrived at their family vacation home in Hawley, a small Pennsylvania town in the Pocono Mountains.  The children were out for spring break, and they all planned on spending the next week skiing and hiking in the Poconos. All plans were cancelled as soon as they arrived to their shockingly empty house with four feet of snow under a broken living room window.

George Berrant, a local security specialist said, “This type of crime is becoming more and more common.  Criminals know that few people take the appropriate vacation home security measures and that the chance of anyone being home is almost none, so they break in and take everything but the kitchen sink.”

The Gullentry’s home in Philadelphia is equipped with a state-of-the-art security system with numerous security cameras, motion detectors, and security lights, but according to Gullentry, “Until that Friday afternoon, vacation home security had never crossed my mind.”

The amount of snow inside the Gullentry’s house led the police to believe the original burglary took place sometime in November, and the criminal kept coming back time after time until everything was gone.  Neither the Gullentry family nor the police had any way of knowing about the crimes because the home is located on a secluded lot and didn’t have a vacation home security system.

“It scares me to death to think what might have happened if my family had been in the house when this happened.  I know now that vacation home security is just as important as the security of my home in Philadelphia,” said Gullentry.

In the last five years, Gullentry has taken measures to ensure this will never happen again.  He installed:

  • A vacation home security system that not only alerts the police but calls both Gullentry and his wife on their cell phones in the case of a burglary.
  • Security cameras he can control and monitor from his home and work computers in Philadelphia.
  • Temperature sensors that alert his vacation home security system if the temperature drops below a preset temperature.
  • Glass break detectors in every room with windows that signal the vacation home security system if anyone breaks a window trying to enter the home.

The burglary that led to over $20,000 worth of belongings being stolen from the Gullentry family could have been prevented with a few vacation home security devices. Don’t be the next victim, invest in vacation home security now.
